MEMORIES: Special Mention Most Fanatical
Dick's has many fans, but Karl Borgwardt, Tom McNutt and their followers
are definitely the most fanatical. Their memory contest entry was a full
color calendar including the photos shown here.
"On the first day the lord looked down upon the earth and he
said: "Let there be cheeseburgers." So he created Dick's Drive
In."-The Rocket, 12/84
Greetings from the ultimate Dick's fans. These photos are the product
of a group of us who consider ourselves Dick's ambassadors to the world.
Tom McNutt, Barry and Sue Zirko, Ben Carlile, Karl and Marybeth Borgwardt,
and Maureen Oschell have drawn from their collections and put together
photos of all of us in Dick's Attire in various parts of the world.
One of Tom McNutt's greatest desires was to have a picture of the Dick's
cow hanging in his living room. Well, Tom did commission an artist to
paint the cow but he gave it to me as a wedding present so now it hangs
in my living room. At first my new wife didn't know quite what to think
of it but she has come to appreciate the cow for all that it stands for.
Of course she was a vegetarian at the time although within a year she
ate her first piece of meat in fifteen years. Naturally it was a Dick's
Deluxe. Well I sincerely hope that it's a happy Dick's year for all of
you. I know it will be for us.

Dick's is Seattle
I think that it is fair to say that I am with little doubt your biggest
fan! Few of your customers have such strong loyalty or so many memories!
Often on a Saturday when I was a child we would travel with Mom to "the
end of Broadway" for 19¢ hamburgers and to feed the pigeons.
During high school, my friends and I would meet up after every kind of
event. All we needed to do was identify the location and somehow we would
manage to find each other. "Broadway", "45th," Queen
Anne", "Lake City," or "Holman Road". Every Seattle
native knew where all 5 locations were and how long it would take to get
there from any part of town. You have seen me wearing anything from a
tux to a Totinos pizza box, and I have rarely received poor service and
never when I didn't deserve it.
After college, friends would visit from around the world and Dick's was
always an important part of their tour of Seattle. We would visit all
five locations over the course of the day visiting important Seattle places
along the way. Tour completed returned home and would send photographs
of themselves in their Dick's shirts. When traveling, part of my mandatory
wardrobe has always been my shirt. I realize that the shirt says "Dick's",
but it has always said "Seattle" to me. Well at least since
you were smart enough to close down the one in the city across the bridge.
"Important decisions, good news and bad, letters from women I no
longer had, much has been processed and much had been thought, over a
Deluxe and some fries in your parking lot."
You have provided three generations of my family the opportunity to eat
consistent food at a fair price. I once commissioned Gloria to paint "Dick
the Cow" so "Broadway" wouldn't feel forgotten, but I gave
it to a good friend as a wedding present instead. He understood the value
and proudly displays it over his family's fireplace as a reminder of all
the fun times we have had loitering in your parking lot. HAPPY 40TH BIRTHDAY
DICK'S!!!
